‘Tis the season for a robust content marketing campaign! Just as retail stores are sprucing up their front windows with wreaths, candles, and garland, so should online marketing ventures be overhauled and decorated to meet the demands of the holidays.

Unfortunately, there is much confusion about how brands should celebrate the holiday season on their social media sites. Some companies think it is enough to send a quick seasonal greeting via Twitter or Facebook. While there is nothing wrong with this, it’s worth noting that it’s not very effective: Studies show that, since so many companies send out “Happy Holidays” messages from their social media accounts, the effect of such messaging is fairly diluted.

There are some deeper, much more effective ways to get a content marketing campaign holiday-ready. A few tips are listed below.

  • Dress up your website. You’ve probably put some festive décor in your home, so why not do the same on your company website? It’s important not to go overboard and make it too tacky here, but adding a candy cane graphic or a wreath to your website or blog can cause readers to pause and take notice of the site in ways they never have before.
  • Go behind the scenes. Content marketing is great for showcasing the “human” side of your company, and that is never truer than it is during the holiday season. If you have an office Christmas gathering or a white elephant gift exchange, take some photos and upload them to Twitter and Instagram.
  • Offer some holiday promos. Use Twitter, Facebook, or an email marketing platform to spread some special, festive promos. There’s no time like the Christmas shopping season to give away free shipping or gift wrapping, product bundles or 10 percent off vouchers; simply offer an exclusive promo code that your social media followers can use to claim these rewards. This is a great way to build customer loyalty!
  • Hold a holiday-themed contest. Ask customers to submit photos of themselves using your products, perhaps also adorned with Santa hats or some other festive attire. Cultivate true involvement by summoning the inclusive spirit of the holidays!
  • Highlight your customers. The holiday season also happens to mark the end of the year, so it is a great time to pause and look back on what your company has accomplished over the past 12 months. A good way to do this is to spotlight some of your top customers and clients, thanking them and acknowledging them on your social media channels.
