Control What You Can in Your Job Search

Jobless manWhat makes the job search so frustrating is the simple fact that much of it lies beyond your control. No matter how hard you hustle, how diligent and how polished you are in presenting yourself, you can’t make a new career materialize; whether an employer decides to hire you is simply beyond your control. Likewise, there is nothing you can do to create openings at the company of your dreams. It will happen or it won’t. You can’t force it. You can’t speak it into happening.

Because there are so many variables beyond your control, the job search can lead you to feel powerless sometimes—but it doesn’t have to. The secret is to control what you can, when you can—to make sure you exercise power over whatever you can, so that those things that are beyond your power will stand a better chance of falling into place.

A few things jobseekers can control include:

  1. Your online brand. What do employers find out when they Google you, or look you up on Facebook? To a large extent, you decide. You decide what you post about on social media, what you blog about, who is allowed to see your personal Facebook page, and so on. Be cautious about anything and everything you do on the Web: Remember that all of it reflects your professional brand.
  2. The way you spend your time. Simply put, are you treating the job search like a full-time job unto itself—or are you approaching it too casually? Make sure you’re taking plenty of time to network, to scour job boards, to post on LinkedIn, to practice your interview pitch, and so on.
  3. The way you present yourself. Do you have some nice interview clothes? A strong personal sales pitch? A consistent approach to marketing yourself as an appealing candidate?
  4. Your stress level. Okay, maybe you can’t fully control this—but there are certain things you can do to avoid burnout.
  5. Your resume. Your resume is the most important piece of the puzzle. A polished, well-structured resume is just the element of marketing collateral you need to stack the deck in your favor.
